How it works

How to live translate a video

Three steps, no setup. The translation follows the speaker instead of waiting for the end of the sentence.

1

Play a video

Any tab with sound: a YouTube video, a lecture, a webinar, a live stream, a podcast or a news clip.

2

Press Alt+L

Live translation starts on that tab. The spoken language is detected for you, or pick it in the panel. Press Alt+L again to stop.

3

Read, understand, learn

Real-time subtitles on top, the translation below. Click any word in the subtitles to see its meaning.

Why it is different

Real-time subtitles you can learn from

More than a caption bubble: a live translator built for people who watch and learn in a foreign language.

Translated while they speak

Long sentences are translated piece by piece as they are spoken, so the translation keeps up with the video.

Original and translation together

Two streams in one small panel: what is said, and what it means. Follow the original while you read the translation.

Click a word, get the dictionary

Every word in the subtitles is clickable: translation, word type and meaning, the same popup as double-click translate.

Detects the spoken language

Reads it from the YouTube audio track or the page itself. A dubbed track or another video switches it on the fly.

Private on-device mode

Install a language pack in Settings and speech in that language is recognized on your own computer, not in the cloud.

Stays out of the way

Drag the panel anywhere, collapse it to one button, and keep it on screen when the video goes fullscreen.

Use cases

Translate videos without subtitles

Live translation listens to the audio of the tab, so it does not need captions to exist:

  • YouTube videos with no subtitles, or auto-captions only
  • Online courses and university lectures
  • Live streams, webinars and conference talks
  • Podcasts, radio and news videos
  • Listening practice when learning a language
Free means free

No minute meter

Most live translation extensions give 5 to 20 free minutes a month, then ask for a subscription. Double Click Translate uses the speech recognition built into Chrome, so a long lecture costs the same as a short clip: nothing.
